The Story of Machakos 2010-2024
The Story of Machakos 2010-2024
In the village of Sultan Hamud in Machakos, Kenya, a new school is growing year by year. This school has been built entirely by the Blackrock College Community of parents, pupils and teachers. Enormous fundraising activity over successive years has helped to bring this amazing dream to reality. The Final Year Class takes on responsibility for the Blackrock College Outreach Programme and each July our young men and parents travel out to Kenya giving their time and physical labour to continue the building programme. All persons travelling covers their own costs therefore ALL monies raised go solely towards the building fund.
In Kenya, secondary education is not government funded, and schools like this are scarce. Hence the idea in 2010 for us to come together as a COMMUNITY and build such a school. It first opened its doors in 2014 and today there are almost 300 boys attending – at full capacity it will house 540. Boys and 40 girls from 15 different tribes attend the Holy Ghost school with 42 different languages spoken. It is also a boarding school as the boys and girls are from nomadic tribes. Holy Ghost school has given the students HOPE, a roof over their heads and regular meals, but most of all the OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN and BE THEIR BEST. Indeed, many from the village have also been earning a living working in the school. Holy Ghost has become an integral part of this community. A Technical school has been built for Graduates to learn trades & carry their education forward and class 2024 will continue fundraising for further development and maintenance. So the work goes on.
