ANOTHER GREAT DAY AT BLACKROCK!
The sun shone on a huge crowd of parents, students, past-students and friends of Blackrock as we returned to our Annual Sports and Family Day after a 3 year absence. Great to be back!
The day started with Soloist Stephen Wong (6th Year) singing the National Anthem. From thereon it was non-stop activity across the lawn, as well as the Open Day Displays across St. Patrick’s Hall, the Lecture Hall and Our Lady’s Corridor and the Creative Arts and Digital Learning Centre. The best of Blackrock – Science, Development Education, Green Schools, Art, Sports and Construction Projects – was on display.
Competition of the Day
A highlight of the day is the draw for half a year’s dayboy fee.

Past Pupils Sports Personality Award
President of the Union, Mr Robert Brophy (class of 1982), presented this year’s Past Pupils Sports Personality Award to Luke McCann (Class of 2016) who, in the last 4 months, has set a new record, both indoor and outdoor, for the 1000m, has become indoor National Champion at 1500m He has competed in the world indoor Athletic Championships and has clock 3.53.86 for the mile (indoors).
Sports Personality of the Year Award
After an excellent acceptance speech, Luke presented Gus McCarthy, captain of the 70th cup winning side, with Sports Personality of the Year Award. Gus acknowledged the calibre of those in his year who were in contention for the award and thanked his family and coaches.

It was a great day – the College sparkled. We thank our Grounds, Maintenance and Household teams for their dedication and pride in Blackrock. We thank Mary, Albert and our Sodexo Catering Team for their organisation and sponsorship of the afternoon teas, the proceeds, €1,262 went to Ukraine.
We thank the President of the Union Robert and his wife Sarah for presenting the medals throughout the afternoon.
Finally, we thank our Organising Committee of Mr Barry, Mr Kelly, Mr O’Brien, Ms Keenan, Mr Albert Beattie, Mr Phil Ryan, Mr Herlihy, Mr Fintan O’Connor, Mr Orrock, Mr O’Shea, Mr Ken Burtenshaw, Ms Nolan, Ms Markey and my colleagues who helped with the running of the events.
Sports and Family Day is a very important celebration of the Blackrock community. It would not be possible without the effort and goodwill of so many – parents, staff, past and current students, extended families and our Spiritan Community.
