Soccer – News of the Past

News of the Past
The past pupils’ soccer club, Blackrock College AFC, have qualified for their first UCFL Challenge Cup final after a thrilling victory over Liberties, 3-1 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw (Cormac Cullinane with the equaliser). Sam Walsh, Conor Drury and James Kelly converted their penalties and Dylan O’Reilly made a crucial penalty save. They play Portmarnock AFC in the final on Saturday May 12th in the Home Farm Grounds in Whitehall, kick off 7pm.
Blackrock College AFC was founded in 1983 by the late Joe McGrath who had trained soccer teams in the school for many years. He thus sowed the seed for generations of past ‘Rock boys to keep their love of soccer alive and form lifelong memories. The club has allowed camaraderie and friendship to flourish between different school graduation years and served as an important link to our alma mater.
With over 60 playing members the Club are enjoying exciting times. The Saturday team lead Division One of the league with three games remaining with the Sunday team lying third in their league. The club will play in the Leinster Senior League next season and preparations are already afoot to continue their progression.
The Club welcome any member who is committed to playing the game in the correct spirit so anybody interested in becoming involved next season should contact the Honorary Secretary Bryan Furey (Class of 2014) at blackrockafc.secretary@gmail.com.
