Science Week 2020
Science Week
Monday 9th – Friday 13th November 2020
Science predominated on the College halls, walls and corridors last week. On St Patrick’s Corridor there were over 150 posters with information about STEM careers as well as ‘SciFlix’ posters listing Science documentaries and movies which are available on Netflix. Posters of celebrities, sports stars and actors who graduated with Science Degrees were on display in the 5th and 6th year Rec areas, while ‘Women in Science’ and an ‘Ology’ Exhibition were celebrated in the CADLC.
Dave’s Jungle opened the week as he introduced his pets – spiders (including a tarantula), snakes, frogs and a crocodile – to our appreciative boys and some teachers too. It was both an engaging and an educational experience for the boys.
The Physics Quiz for 2nd and 3rd Years embraced modern technology by using a QR Code, which was placed on posters around the 2nd and 3rd year corridors, to enter.
The 3rd Year Science Quiz was held in the labs with the class teacher. In an enthusiastic, noisy, fun-filled afternoon, the boys didn’t disappoint with their very active participation.
The Senior Science Quiz was contested by 24 students who had to answer 10 questions on each of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and General Knowledge. For the first time ever, we required a tie break in which Donal De Buitler was victorious with Robbie Gallagher 2nd and Darragh Harrison 3rd.
Another feature was the 2nd Year SciFest, our 7th, and the 134 projects were displayed along the Science corridor. The judging for SciFest will take place on Wednesday 20th November.
Finally, our first Science Photography competition, open to staff and students, with the theme Biodiversity will run until the 30th November.
What a week!
We thank Ms Groves, Ms Nolan, Mr Ward and our Science Department. The exceptionally high standard of our Science weeks (under very different circumstances) has been maintained.
