Friday 18th & Saturday 19th February 2022
ROCKMUN (Blackrock College Model United Nations) was held on the 18th and 19th of February. With this being the first in-person Model United Nations (UN) Conference in Ireland since the COVID-19 pandemic began, it was met with great hope and expectation. Over 170 delegates and chairs from 15 different schools gathered in the College to debate a wide variety of topics, ranging from “Ensuring Judicial Integrity” to “The Rights of Indigenous People” to “Tackling Global Inflation”. The Conference was a great success, with everyone involved very happy to be making a return to Model UN, which had not seen an in-person conference in two years.
We would like to congratulate the delegation of the USA for taking home the top prize of “Outstanding Delegation” to Wesley College. Honourable mentions go to France (St. Andrew’s College) and the UAE (St. Gerald’s School) who were also exceptionally well-represented. David Regan (Class of 1981) and Drummond McGinn (Class of 2019) were our guest speakers, who very kindly gave both their time and their insight to the event.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without a massive effort from many people within the College, including Household and Maintenance, Catering, IT and the Senior Leadership Team. We would also like to, in particular, thank Ms. Fitzsimons, our Conference Director and Advisor, for her help with this event.
Congratulations to James Carroll and Michael Redmond (6th Year), Gavin Bowen-O’Connor, Frazer McGinn, Jamie Starr Bourke, Conor Casey, Aaron Murtagh, Christopher Nolan and James Lee (5th Year), Aran O’Flaherty and Patrick Hayden (Transition Year), Jack Droney, Mark Ahearne, Tom Hayden, Sebastian MacManus and Theo Galligan (2nd Year) for their contribution to the successful co-ordination of this event.
Preparations for WCDMUN (Wesley College Dublin MUN), which will take place in March, now begin. The Model UN society meets every Friday after school in the CADLC, everyone is welcome to attend.
A great occasion!
