THE ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR
President of the Union, John Rogan (Class Of 1989), accompanied by his wife Nikki, presented over 250 Awards to our Prizewinners. This is an important day, one when we celebrate our top academic students, celebrate those who have given service, recognise determination and resilience and honour those who have given of their best.
Prize Day is a very special occasion – Every student can, and should, aspire to be part of it. The boys who received awards last Saturday did so not just because they had the ability but because they have chosen to use it.
Valedictorian Tom Dwan (6th Year) delivered an excellent address which, with a splendid blend of humour and gratitude, reviewed the class of 2019’s time at Blackrock.
The Principal acknowledged the contribution made by Mr Simm, Mr Copeland and Mr Carroll to Blackrock, a combined service of 113 years. They retire at the end of this academic year and will be missed from both the staffroom and classroom.
Finally, I thank Mr Sheil, Mr Madden, the Deans, Heads Of Departments, Ms Markey, Ms Nolan and Mr Herlihy for the organisation of the Prize-Giving; Mr T O’Brien for his preparation of the hall and, in particular, the stage; the President of the Union, the Chair of our Board Mr Kennedy and Fr Cormac for presiding; our superb maintenance and household teams; The parents and boys; but most of all, my Teaching Colleagues in attendance who by their presence ensure that this is the academic highlight of the year.
