Past V Present Debate
Thursday, 4th February 2021

This is a very special Blackrock event, and we are delighted that, despite the many challenges, it was held online and live, on Thursday 4th February.
The two teams served up a deliciously entertaining debate whether “this house believes that 2020-21 is the hardest year on record for 2nd level students”.
Proposition: John Huggard (Class of 2020), Conn McCarrick (class of 2014), Darragh Connell and Michael McGrath (both class of 2005)
Opposition: Michael Lucey, Matthew Keely, Pearse Woods (all 6th Year) and Ben Kieran Glennon (Transition Year)
The motion was defeated and the Present team retained the Union Plate with Ben Kieran Glennon adjudged the ‘Best Speaker’.
The debate was superbly chaired by Stephen Ryan (class of 2018) and we thank him and our adjudicators Mr Sheil, Ms Kelleher, Ms Pierce and Michael Ryan (class of 2019). In particular, we thank Ms Ni Shuairc and Mr Orrock for their planning, organisation and delivery of, not just, this spectacular event, but for their ongoing programme of weekly debates and meetings.
