Maths Week – Numeracy Day 2019
Maths Week – Numeracy Day
Monday 14th – Friday 18th October 2019
There was much to do during Maths Week 2019 including a visit to Croke Park on Tuesday 15th for a Sports based series of lectures.
The titles included The Mathematics of Crowds, Health and Human Performance and finally, an outstanding talk on Ball Tracking/The Hawkeye.
Throughout the week there were Slides presented on the monitors around the College which detailed the rich history of maths and its many beautiful equations with contributions from our own brilliant Richard Rowan Hamilton and other genii such as Gauss and Schrodinger.
The Maths Quiz ran all week with some phenomenal questions and contributions. The questions were distributed in every maths class.
The winners were: Adam Deegan McGover (2nd Year), Ronan Fahy (3rd Year), Jack Davy (4th Year), Colm Ó’hAonghusa (5th Year) and Eric Pembrey (6th Year)
The week came to a climax with Numeracy Day. Many numbers in the College, including all the classroom signs, were substituted with their own special equivalent calculations. Colourful posters demonstrating the treasures of numbers were mounted throughout the school and in the Digital Learning Centre. Two doorways were displayed with angle signs to celebrate the great discovery of angular measurement.
I thank Mr McKimm, Mr Costelloe and the Maths Department for their organization of the week’s events.
