On Friday April 1st, Blackrock College Junior Debaters hosted students from Holy Child Killiney in a MACE debate.
Motion 1:
‘This House Believes That the Criminal Justice System Should Focus More on Punishment than on Rehabilitation’.

BC 2: Darragh O’Neill (3rd Year) & Rossa Clonan (2nd Year)
BC 3: Shane Hamilton (3rd Year) & Brian Carroll (2nd Year)
BC 4: Ishaan Pandey (3rd Year) & Josh Murphy (2nd Year)
HCK 1: Clara O’Mahony & Kate Fan
HCK 2: Penelope Tennyson-Smith & Laura Finucane
HCK 3: Olivia Sutton & Orla Casey
HCK 4: Grace Mongey & Hazel Lavery
The top 8 speakers from Round 1 competed in the Final Round arguing either side of the motion: ‘This House Believes That Free Speech is an Absolute Right’.
Top 8 speakers were:
- Holy Child Killiney: Laura Finucane, Grace Mongey, Penelope Tennyson-Smith & Orla Casey
- Blackrock College: Rossa Clonan, Darragh O’Neill, Cillian Staunton & Ishaan Pandey
The judges announced that Proposition: Laura, Rossa, Ishaan and Orla confidently won this Final Round with Ishaan Pandey (3rd Year) and Penelope Tennyson-Smith voted as the best speakers of the afternoon.
