Catholic Schools Week 2019

Ethos
Catholic Schools Week 2019
January 27th – February 2nd 2019
Catholic Schools Week provides an opportunity for us to support our ethos. The theme this year was, “Celebrating the Work of Our Local Catholic Schools”.
In Blackrock, our motto Fides et Robur is not only visible on the crest of the uniform and on the walls around the school, it is also evident in each and every boy who walks through the doors of the College. The staff and the boys are representative of faith and strength in their actions in the school, their tenacity on the pitch and their observance of faith and contemplation in church activities.
In a homily from Fr. Michael Drumm, in 2012, he posed the question “What is a Catholic school?…. and going on to say ‘Could you have a better motto/mission statement for any Catholic school than to teach with authority, to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with our God?” (www.kandle.ie)
The school corridors were alive with boys from 2nd Year to 6th year hunting the corridors to find the clues about the religious significance of our school and trying to win the coveted Treasure Hunt. No person on the corridor got away without answering questions about the school.
The teachers in the staffroom had a chance to show their religious knowledge with a Quiz, where they were quizzed on questions from Noah’s age to knowing who the Pope is.
All of the themes of the week were displayed on St. Patrick’s Corridor which highlighted our focus on faith development within the classroom and beyond.
The week ended with Eucharistic Adoration in the College Chapel which was supported with reverence. Blackrock is a place that serves God by serving others. Our faith calls us to action so that we walk humbly with our God.
I thank our chaplains Ms McGlynn and Ms Crimmins; Mr Madden and Mr O’Reilly, our R.E. teachers, our students and my colleagues for their organisation of and support for the week.
