Maths Week/Numeracy Day
October 2021
The last week before midterm saw the launch of the College’s Maths Week 2021. The week (plus Numeracy Day) was a feast of diverse and highly participatory events.
As usual, a sequence of slides on the monitors detailed the rich history of maths and its many beautiful equations with contributions ranging from our own Richard Rowan Hamilton to those two other immortals, Gauss and Schrödinger.
The Maths Quiz ran all week with a great level of participation. Every pupil in the school was invited to compete through Microsoft Forms.
The quiz winners were:
2nd Year: Olly Woods (26 Maths)
3rd Year: Fintan Kennedy (38C Maths)
4th Year: Simon Considine (48 Maths)
5th Year: Eli O’Reilly (54 Maths)
6th Year: Sam Green (66 Maths)
As is now customary on Numeracy Day (October 19th), the classroom signs were substituted with special equivalent calculations. Numeracy Day finished with Drop Everything and Play Countdown which every student in the school was invited to participate in during the last 15 minutes of class.
“MatMat’s Week 2021″ got an enormous upgrade this year with College’s first Perpetual Protractor Mat, a highlight of our Numeracy Day 2021 celebration. No home should be without one.
This year saw the introduction of the “Maths Escape Room” competition. A very special thank you is extended to Harry Pierce who designed the game which was won by Conall Byrne from Maths 28A. Also I would like to thank the students of 48 for their effort and enthusiasm in making Maths Weeks such a success.
The week finished with our Pinball Jar Competition. The winner was Scott Downes. (The correct number was 445 Pinballs).
Finally, we would like to thank Ms Andrea Dillon for her ever patient assistance in help in setting up the maths quiz so seamlessly and for all help and enthusiasm during Maths Week.
