A huge crowd of parents, students, past-students and friends of Blackrock enjoyed an extensive range of events and displays at our Annual Sports and Family Day.
The day started with Soloist Stephen Ryan (6th Year) singing the National Anthem. From thereon it was non-stop activity across the lawn, as well as the Open Day Displays across St. Patrick’s Hall, the Lecture Hall, Our Lady’s Corridor and the Creative Arts and Digital Learning Centre. The best of Blackrock – Science, Development Education, Green Schools, Art, Sports and Construction Projects – was on display. There was also a special display, provided by our Archives, celebrating 150 years of the College Chapel.
Competition of the Day
A highlight of the day is the draw for half a year’s dayboy fee.

Awards
Past Pupils Sports Personality Award
President of the Union, Mr Eunan O’Carroll (Class of 1984), presented this year’s winner of the Past Pupils Sports Personality Award to Dublin G.A.A. Player Cian O’Sullivan (Class of 2006) who won his 5th All-Ireland Championship last September. This was the second time he has won the award (previously in 2011) and joins Brian O’Driscoll in this. In an excellent acceptance speech Cian spoke fondly of his time at Blackrock, the sense of Community and the friends he made who are still his friends today 12 years on.
Sports Personality of the Year Award
In turn, Cian presented Ewan McMahon (6th Year) with the Sports Personality of the Year Award for his achievements in Sailing both nationally and internationally. Ewan acknowledged this contribution of the school, his teachers, peers and family to his achievements.
Thank You
It was a brilliant day – the College looked superb. I thank our Grounds, Maintenance and Household teams for their dedication and pride in Blackrock.
I thank Mary, Albert and our Sodexo Catering Team for their organisation and sponsorship of the afternoon teas the proceeds of which also go to Machakos.
There was also a raffle for Machakos which raised just over €2,000.
I thank the President of the Union and his wife Judy for presenting the medals throughout the afternoon.
Finally, I thank my colleagues – the Organising Committee: Mr Rowsome, Ms Whyte, Mr Evan O’Brien, Mr O’Reilly, Mr Albert Beattie, Mr Phil Ryan, Mr Herlihy, Mr Fintan O’Connor, Mr Smyth and Mr O’Shea. Also thank you to my colleagues in attendance on the day, as well as our past students who helped with the running of the events.
