Senior Soccer – Visit to St. Bedes, Manchester
Visit to St. Bedes, Manchester
March 3rd – 5th, 2017
A squad of 27 boys travelled to St. Bedes, Manchester for the annual Soccer Challenge. St. Bedes, the school of choice for Manchester City’s Academy, present top class opposition and it is, each year, the highlight of our season. This year did not disappoint!
In the 1st XI Captain Jack Reilly (6th Year) led his squad to victory in a contest that was as good as I have seen at school boy level. We came back from a 0-2 deficit to snatch an equaliser in the 90th minute with Aran Horgan’s (5th Year) penalty. Harry Norris had scored mid-way through the 2nd half to raise hopes. And so to a penalty shoot-out. Peter Quinlan (Transition Year) who was brilliant throughout the game, saved the first penalty and all 5 of our penalty takers – Aran Horgan, Peter Walsh (6th Year), Jack Tonge (5th Year), Harry Norris and Jack Reilly (both 6th Year) slotted home for a 5-3 margin. Fantastic!
Playing simultaneously on an all-weather surface Captain Luke Powderly (6th Year) and our 2nd XI were superb. Goals from Barry O’Sullivan (2), Jonty Byrne (2) and Daniel Thomson (all 5th Year) delivered a 5-3 victory.
This was our first ‘Double’ over St. Bedes away from home since the series started in 2003.
I would like to thank the management and staff of St. Bedes for their wonderful hospitality and also the families from St. Bedes who welcomed our boys into their homes for 2 nights. I also thank our boys who represented us so well on and off the field.
I thank our coaches, Mr Evan O’Brien, Mr Sullivan, Dylan O’Reilly (Class of 2013), Brian Horgan (Class of 2014) and Sean Dowd (Class of 2015) whose leadership and example, energy and interest made it possible.
We look forward to welcoming St. Bedes to Blackrock next year!
