Past Vs Present Debate 2017
The ‘Past’ team of James Cronin (Class of 2016), Robert McCarthy (Class of 2011), Rossa Fanning (Class of 1993) and David McWilliams (Class of 1983) successfully proposed the motion that “In the light of recent events, this house believes that Ireland’s best interest would be served by leaving the EU” before a large audience in the lecture hall last night, Thursday 9th February.
The ‘Present’ team of John Heavey, Scott Donohoe (both 6th Year), Stephen Ryan (T.Yr) and Michael Ryan (5th Year) opposed the motion with style, wit and cogency.
Michael Ryan was deemed to be the best speaker on the present side while Rossa Fanning won the best overall speaker award.
I thank our adjudicators Mr. Sheil (Class of 1979), Ms. Kelleher and Joshua Kieran-Glennon (Class of 2015), Chairman Eoin Martin (Class of 2015) and President Of The Union Brian O’Neill (Class of 1981) who set the scene with a witty introduction, for their endeavours on the night. I also thank Mr. Shane Murphy (Class of 1981) and Mr. Sheil for their organisation of this event.
