ALL IRELAND LINGUISTIC OLYMPIAD (AILO)
Congratulations to:
David Roper-Nolan, Jonathan Hunter, Jonathan McDowell, Jack Hanrahan, Oisín O’Reilly, Michael Feely, Kevin Heavey, Séafra Ó Faoláin, Brian Yip (all Sixth Year) who have qualified for the final of the AILO, which will be held in Trinity on March 25th.
This is a contest in which the students develop their own strategies for solving problems in different languages such as deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics, interpreting Tenfi and writing the names of football teams in Chinese. The problems require logical ability, patient work and an ability to think laterally.
The aim of the competition is to develop problem-solving skills, and to encourage them to consider 3rd Level courses and careers around language, linguistics and computing.
100 students will contest the final in Trinity. The Top 4 will qualify to represent Ireland as the International Linguistics Olympiad in Beijing next July.
I thank Ms McGee for her organisation of this opportunity.
