DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION (D.E.)
Blackrock College was delighted to host the Spiritan Schools’ Network second Development Education Showcase event last Friday, April 22, 2016.
We welcomed Transition Year students from Rockwell, St Mary’s, St Michael’s and Templeogue as well as 1st Years from Willow Park and St Mary’s all of whom joined with our Transition Year students in highlighting how each school can contribute to building a sense of community around the world.
The school projects were displayed on St Patrick’s Hall. Each school had the opportunity to present their work to the other participants at a General Assembly held in the Lecture Hall. It provided the boys and girls (Rockwell) with an opportunity to engage with each other on matters of social injustice and deprivation both at home and abroad.
The Blackrock Project – ‘The power of Solidarity’ – was based on the reflections of the Transition Year boys who visited Kolkata and Kenya this year as well as those who support the Soup Run that takes place weekly in our own native city. I congratulate Fr. Cleary and Eugene Smyth from the Spiritan Education Trust for their organisation of the event, the teachers and students from our sister schools, the KDSC Evaluators, my colleagues Ms Payne, Ms McMahon, Bro. Joe Cannon, Mr Walsh, Mr Toolan, Mr Goan, Mr Tom Ryan, Mr O’Neill, Mr Herlihy and, of course, our Transition Year students who represented us so well.
Finally, I thank Kathryn Cummins, Alan Sheridan and our Household Crew; Marco Himpers, Tommy Moore, Fintan O’Connor and our Maintenance Team;
Mary Mac Sorley and our Catering Crew for making it happen so seamlessly.
