ADDICTION AWARENESS WEEK
Monday 22nd – Friday 26th February 2016

A range of speakers including Psychologists, Gardai, Barristers, Solicitors, Social Media Experts and Recovering Addicts addressed the boys in their respective Year groups.
The 2nd Year talks on Addiction had an emphasis on social media and how it can affect behaviour;
In 3rd Year the talks’ focus was on Alcohol and Drug Awareness and the legal consequences of abuse.
4th Year heard about the risks associated with Gambling and how Drugs can impact their lives;
5th Year was addressed by two former Addicts who shared their journey to recovery from Drug and Gambling Addictions respectively;
And in 6th Year, former Inter-County Footballer Oisin McConville told his personal story, his struggle to overcome his Gambling Addiction.
The week ended with a lunchtime Debate on Friday – “That this House would outlaw Gambling on School Sports Events”. Jordan McDonald and Ben Jordan (both 6th Year) successfully proposed the Motion. Dónal Ó Cribín (6th Year) and John Heavey (5th Year) opposed.
The week’s events were organised by a very active Parents’ Committee, Ms Kelleher, Mr Sheil and our House-keeping Department, the TY House Captains and Mr McMahon – thank you for a most informative and worthwhile programme.
